Joey Petschl

Head Coach · Bishop Blanchet
Joey Petschl enters his fifth year with Shorewood High School boys’ basketball program. Prior to Shorewood, Petschl was Director of Basketball Operations at Oregon State University, and spent six seasons under Wayne Tinkle at the University of Montana, where the Grizzlies won three Big Sky Conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times. As an assistant coach at Saint Martin’s University, he helped build the program from 6-22 to 15-13 in one season.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Montana in 2012 and a master’s degree in adult training from the University of Phoenix in 2016. He graduated from Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle in 2008. He and his wife, Devin, reside in Edmonds and have three sons, Jackson, Cameron and Myles.
Zane Hopen
[ JV HEAD COACH ]
JV Head Coach · Shorewood
Zane Hopen is a Stormray twice over. A four-year member of the Shorewood boys basketball program and a 2014 graduate, Hopen returned to coach on the same floor he played on, now serving as varsity assistant and head coach of the junior varsity. As a player, he shared the court with Shorewood’s 2013 All-WESCO class, part of teams that won 14-plus games and made deep district runs.

After Shorewood, Hopen earned his degree in journalism and mass communication from Arizona State University and built a career at the intersection of sports and storytelling — working as a sports multimedia journalist at KPVI, a video reporter for 247Sports, and Director of Communications at Basketball Travelers before moving into his current role at Ziply Fiber. He brings a player’s understanding of the program’s standards and a communicator’s eye to developing the next varsity core.
Naode Mehari
[ C-TEAM HEAD COACH ]
C-Team Head Coach · Shorewood
Naode Mehari coaches where he came up. A guard for the Stormrays and a 2017 Shorewood graduate, Mehari spent three seasons on the varsity roster and finished his career as one of the team’s leading scorers, with senior-year nights like an 18-point outing against Marysville Getchell. Now he leads the C Team — the program’s first rung — handing down the standards he learned on this floor.

Working with young people is what Mehari does on both sides of the clock: he serves as a paraeducator in the Edmonds School District, supporting students at Maplewood K-8. On the bench, he coaches alongside his younger brother Abel, a fellow Shorewood alum — making the Stormrays staff a family affair nearly a decade in the making.
Jeff Twining
[ ASSISTANT ]
Assistant · Seattle Prep
Jeff Twining brings a competitor’s background and hometown roots to the bench. A Shoreline native, Twining starred at Seattle Prep — earning Class 3A All-State honorable mention and first-team All-Metro League honors at defensive end, second-team all-league nods at both running back and punter, and serving as team co-captain and MVP — before going on to play running back at Western Washington University, lettering twice for the Vikings.

Twining brings the experience of a true multi-sport athlete to Shorewood: beyond football, he lettered twice in basketball at Seattle Prep, winning a league title his senior year, and once in baseball. Off the floor, he built his early career in sports media — serving as editor-in-chief of WWU’s newspaper, The Western Front — before moving into the Seattle tech world, where he works as a senior product marketing manager.
Ron Schott

Director of Basketball Operations · Wenatchee
2026 will be Ron Schott’s second season with the Stormrays. Schott brings an extensive youth coaching background (baseball, basketball, and football) to the program in addition to his operational experience. Off the court, Schott is responsible for program communications, marketing, and logistics.

He calls on decades of experience in marketing and sports-fueled partnerships with Microsoft and professional sports organizations. In his day job, Schott is the Senior Director of Strategic Communications for the College of Education, Sport, and Human Sciences at Washington State University. A multi-sport athlete at Wenatchee High School and a 2001 graduate, Schott went on to earn his degree from the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University in 2005. He lives with his wife Camille, son Lucas, and daughter Claire in Woodway, WA.
Abel Mehari

Abel Mehari went from the roster to the bench almost without missing a beat. A Stormray during the seasons that built toward the program’s return to prominence, Mehari graduated from Shorewood in 2024 and joined the coaching staff soon after — bringing the freshest possible perspective on what it takes to compete here, because he just did it.

Now a student at Seattle University, Mehari coaches alongside his older brother Naode, Shorewood '17 and head coach of the C Team. Between them, the brothers connect nearly a decade of Stormrays basketball.
